Most roundups of the «most beautiful places in Ukraine» are built from the same five postcards: the Carpathians, Sofiyivka, Kamianets, the Tunnel of Love, Khotyn. They really are beautiful, but they are also the most trampled spots in the country, where in summer there are more people than scenery. What follows is not an attempt to rewrite that same list, but a hint on where to head for beautiful places in Ukraine when you want an experience rather than a queue for a photo. The Carpathians are not one mountain and not one Bukovel

When people say «let's go to the Carpathians», they usually mean Bukovel, and that is exactly where it is priciest and most crowded. But the range is vast, and the finest scenery is often an hour's drive from the well-known resorts. Lake Synevyr, sitting at nearly 1,000 metres, is at its best not in summer but in the shoulder season, when the tour buses thin out. Dragobrat, the country's highest-altitude resort, is worth a visit even without snow: from there you can hike up Blyznytsia to meadows that fill with wild blueberries in summer. And if you want proper quiet, look not for a resort but for a village guesthouse somewhere in Zakarpattia, where breakfast is not a buffet but banush cooked in front of you.

The west of the country holds the most surviving architecture

Lviv is the obvious choice, so briefly: the city deserves more than a rushed day, it deserves two nights, because half its beauty is hidden in courtyards that guided tours never enter. Far less obvious is Kamianets-Podilskyi: the old fortress above the canyon of the Smotrych River looks more striking than any restored castle, precisely because it is real and not a stage set. The centre and south are underrated for no good reason

Uman with its Sofiyivka park is a case where human hands outplayed nature: grottoes, waterfalls and an underground river, all laid out back in the 18th century. Go there not at the weekend peak but on a weekday morning. A completely different story is the Aktove Canyon in the Mykolaiv region, which people call Ukraine's canyon and not for empty flattery: the granite cliffs above the Mertvovod River look as though you are not on the steppe but somewhere much further south. Nearby lies the Granite-Steppe Buh Land with its rapids, where people come to kayak.

Water you don't need to fly to the sea for

Not all of the country's most beautiful bodies of water are salty and down south. The Shatsk Lakes in Volyn are a system of almost thirty lakes, and Svitiaz among them is Ukraine's deepest natural lake and the largest of the Shatsk Lakes, with clear water. In a class of their own are the pink lakes near Henichesk and in the Kherson region: their colour comes from an algae, and they are brightest in the heat, when the water grows shallow. The same condition applies here as at the start: before travelling south or east, check the security and transport situation.
