Hurkalo Waterfall is a five-metre cascade on the Velyka Richka river in the Skolivski Beskydy National Nature Park, reached by about 5 kilometres of forest trail from the village of Korchyn. You cannot get here by car, and that is exactly why it stays quiet even at the peak of the season.
Where Hurkalo Waterfall is located
This is the Skole area, the south-west of Lviv region. After the administrative reform the territory moved to Stryi district, but the signposts still more often say "Skolivski Beskydy". The waterfall sits on a river with the plain name Velyka Richka, a tributary of the Stryi, a few kilometres south-west of the centre of Korchyn.
Formally, Hurkalo Waterfall is a hydrological natural monument of local significance within the Skolivski Beskydy National Nature Park. It stands about 570 metres above sea level, so the way here is more of a long forest walk than serious trekking.
What kind of cascade it is and why "Hurkalo"
The name is onomatopoeic: the water here does not fall in a thin thread, it rumbles. There is a single cascade, roughly 5 metres high, and a rocky ledge splits the flow into two unequal parts. Below it a plunge pool has been carved out, about 10 metres across and up to two metres deep. Further upstream there are several smaller steps that locals call the Little Hurkalo, so walk a bit further up the river.

How to get to Hurkalo Waterfall
The base point is the village of Korchyn. From the road bridge in the centre of the village to the waterfall is about 4-6 kilometres depending on where you start counting. On foot that is roughly 2-2.5 hours at an easy pace one way. The trail is marked, runs along the river and crosses streams several times on wooden footbridges.
You cannot drive all the way in: the dirt road crosses streams, and even in dry weather the last kilometres are on foot. After rain the road turns to mud, so bring suitable footwear.
The classic entrance is from Korchyn, and there is an alternative from the neighbouring Krushelnytsia, also along a marked route. Both lead to the same cascade. Buses and minibuses from Skole and Stryi reach the villages themselves, and from there it is on foot.

| Route | Start | Distance on foot | Time one way |
|---|---|---|---|
| Main | Korchyn village, bridge in the centre | about 4-6 km | 2-2.5 h |
| Alternative | Krushelnytsia village | marked trail | roughly 2-3 h |
How much the entrance costs
The waterfall itself is free, there is no fence or ticket booth beside it. This is national park territory, and a symbolic recreation fee applies at certain developed sites of the Skolivski Beskydy, so keep some small change on hand. The amounts are small and change from time to time, so check the current rate before your trip on the park's official resources.
When to go so you are not disappointed
The power of the waterfall depends on how much water is in the river. Hurkalo is at its fullest in spring, in April and May, when the snow melts in the mountains: the two flows merge into a solid wall and the sound carries from afar.
In summer there is less water and the cascade is thinner, but the pool beneath it warms up, and people come here to swim and pitch tents. July and August are the busiest and warmest, though not the most spectacular in terms of force. Autumn is beautiful because of the colour of the forest, but it is slippery after rain. In winter the road is hard and the waterfall itself partly freezes, and that is a separate reason to come if you are confident walking snowy slopes.
| Season | What you get | Downside |
|---|---|---|
| Spring (Apr-May) | Maximum force, loudest of all | Mud on the trail, cold water |
| Summer (Jul-Aug) | Swimming, camping, warmth | Most people, weaker flow |
| Autumn | Colours of the forest, fewer tourists | Slippery after rain |
| Winter | Icy cascade, silence | Hard road, experience needed |
What to see nearby
People rarely come to Hurkalo on its own: other Skole-area sites are packed close around, and it is realistic to tick off several points in a single trip.

- Mount Parashka is the highest peak of the Skolivski Beskydy, a landmark ascent with a panorama over the ridges.
- Kamianka Waterfall is another cascade in the park, closer to Skole and easier for families with children.
- The Dead Lake is a small forest body of water with characteristically dark water not far away.
Who this route is not for
If you expect to drive up to a railing, take a photo and leave, Hurkalo will disappoint you: there is no way in without the walking part. With very small children it is smarter to choose the closer and easier Kamianka Waterfall. And do not come for the main spectacle in the August heat expecting a powerful flow, there is little water at that time.
There is no infrastructure on site, so bring water, a snack, trekking shoes and a raincoat. Signal in the forest is unstable, download the route offline in advance, and take your rubbish with you, there are no bins here.
If you are going to the Carpathians for the first time and want an easy format, combine Hurkalo with a short walk to Kamianka Waterfall and an overnight stay in Skole. But if you have already been to these parts, take a full-day route: Korchyn, Hurkalo, a climb towards Parashka. That way one small cascade turns into a full mountain walk.
