Best time to visit Turkey: the short answer

The most comfortable time for the sea in Turkey is not July and August, the way they are marketed, but late May into June and September into the first half of October. The water is already (or still) warm, the air is not scorching, and prices and crowds are noticeably lower than in the peak month.

But there is no single answer to the question of when it is best to visit Turkey, because the country runs in two different modes. There is beach Turkey, with a swimming season that opens and closes based on water temperature. And there is urban Turkey, above all Istanbul, where people go all year round, and the hot summer is more of a drawback here.

When does the swimming season start and end on the Mediterranean coast?

The southern Mediterranean coast (Antalya, Kemer, Side, Alanya) keeps its water warm the longest in the country. The swimming season runs roughly from May to October: during these months the sea temperature around Antalya does not drop below +20 °C, and at the height of summer it reaches +29 °C.

May and early June already mean confident swimming without the July stuffiness. The sea has not yet climbed to its peak +29 and stays around +23 to +25 °C, while the air is comfortable for sightseeing and walks, not just for lying under an umbrella.

October works the other way. The water in the south stays warm (around +24 to +25 °C in the first weeks), the sun is no longer so aggressive, and your hotel and flight bill is noticeably smaller than in August. This is exactly the answer to the question of the best time to visit Turkey for the sea if you do not like overpaying.

Why are July and August the peak of price rather than the peak of enjoyment?

July and August overlap with the school holidays of half of Europe, which makes them the most expensive and most crowded weeks of the year. Prices for tours, hotels and flights are at their highest, the beaches are packed, and the sun loungers by the pools are snapped up first thing in the morning.

Add the weather. August in the south is the month of peak heat: the air often stays above +33 °C, the evening does not always bring relief, and the sea warms up to +29 °C and barely refreshes at all. For a lazy, sunbathing kind of holiday it is bearable. For any activity beyond the sea, from a walk through Antalya's old town to a trip to the waterfalls, the heat becomes a real limitation.

Families with school-age children often have no choice: they are tied to the holidays. But if you are free to pick your dates, August is the worst trade of money for comfort.

Why are July and August the peak of price rather than the peak of enjoyment?

The Aegean coast: the same country, but a few degrees easier

The western Aegean coast (Bodrum, Marmaris, Cesme, the area around Izmir) deserves a special mention precisely for those who cannot handle intense heat. The air here is less humid, a sea breeze blows more often, and even at the height of summer the temperature is easier to bear than in the south, which is sheltered from the breeze.

The price for this comfort: the swimming season on the Aegean is a little shorter, and the water is a few degrees cooler than in Antalya. So if the goal is the longest and warmest possible swimming, the south wins. If the goal is not to melt and to combine the sea with activity, look to the west.

Golden September and October: why this is the smartest compromise

September in Turkey is deservedly called the golden season. The heat has already eased, but the sea still holds its summer warmth: across the various resort regions the air and water hover somewhere around +25 to +28 °C and stay steady almost around the clock.

Closer to the start of October a financial bonus is added to the season: prices for accommodation and flights start creeping down, while the weather in the south is still perfectly suitable for swimming. The result is a rare combination where you pay less and get more comfortable conditions than in overpriced August.

An honest caveat: September is not always cheaper than July right from the first of the month. The first half of the month sometimes still holds near-peak prices, and the real drop begins later. And the further into October, the higher the chance of catching the first rains, especially in the evening.

Istanbul runs on a different calendar

Istanbul is not a beach destination but a city one, and its best seasons are the opposite of the beach ones. The optimal months here are April, May, September and October, when the temperature stays in a pleasant range of roughly +15 to +25 °C, the city blossoms in spring or softens in autumn, and there are fewer tourists than in summer.

Summer in Istanbul is more of a downside: in July and August it can hit +30 to +35 °C, and that is a lot for a city where you are on your feet all day, surrounded by concrete, queues for Hagia Sophia and the crush of the Grand Bazaar. In winter it is chilly here (more often around +8 to +15 °C), damp and windy, occasionally even with snow, but this is the quietest and cheapest season, and the Bosphorus itself has its own character in gloomy weather.

The main thing is that Istanbul is open all year round. The mosques, palaces, bazaars and hammams do not depend on water temperature, so people come here whenever it suits them, not when the swimming season opens.

Do you need a visa to plan your trip in advance?

Citizens of Ukraine enjoy visa-free travel: you can stay in Turkey for up to 90 days within any 180. You are allowed to enter both with a foreign passport and with a biometric ID card. The foreign passport must be valid for at least 150 days from the date of entry, rather than the usual "six months".

This means you choose your travel dates purely around the weather and budget, not around visa windows. If you plan to stay longer than 90 days, you will need to apply for a residence permit through Turkey's migration service. Visa conditions change from time to time, so check the current rules on the official Ministry of Foreign Affairs portal before buying tickets.

So when should you go

If it is your first time and the sea is the main goal, take June or September: warm water, bearable heat, and still reasonable prices. If you cannot handle the heat, look to the Aegean coast or the start of October. And if the beach does not interest you and you want Istanbul, museums and bazaars, forget the swimming calendar entirely and plan for April, May or golden October, when the city is at its most comfortable.
