# Italy to Launch the Luxurious "Dolce Vita" Sleeper Train

It's one of Europe's most beautiful countries, home to an immense cultural heritage: world-famous cities, breathtaking landscapes and a first-rate railway system for getting around.

Italy is already a dream for travelers, but now there are plans to make the rail experience even more thrilling, with the development of the "Treno della Dolce Vita" project.

The "Dolce Vita" train will run 10 routes across Italy's most celebrated landscapes, aboard historic carriages dripping with retro luxury in the spirit of the Dolce Vita era. The routes will cover 14 of Italy's 20 regions and reach 128 cities, spanning 10,000 miles of track from north to south. Journeys will range from one to three nights.

Passengers, who will sleep, dine and be entertained on board in the style of iconic services such as Belmond's Venice Simplon-Orient-Express, will be able to travel through the famous hills of Tuscany and around Sicily in lavish trains that pay tribute to Federico Fellini's 1960s film of the same name.

The trains were meant to launch in 2023, but the project was unveiled with a trial run from Rome to Civitavecchia, on the Lazio coast, aboard a vintage train specially fitted out for the occasion.

Renowned chef Carlo Cracco handled the catering for the journey, offering a taste of what guests can expect.

Treno Dolce Vita is a joint venture between Trenitalia, part of Italy's state railway company Ferrovie dello Stato, and Arsenale S.p.A., a firm specializing in luxury hospitality that is behind a string of upcoming high-end hotels, including Soho House in Rome and Rosewood in Venice.

A project spokesperson called it "a new frontier in luxury hospitality," promising that all of Italy's greatest draws (the sea, the hills, the lakes, the mountains, the medieval villages and the gastronomic hotspots) would be served by these trains.

The project hopes to tap into a post-pandemic appetite for traveling to lesser-visited places and taking things at a slower pace.

Paolo Barletta, CEO of Arsenale SpA, said: "Tourism isn't just about hotels and restaurants. Italy is a 360-degree experience, and we need to start again from that experience to build a complete offering."

He promised the trains would carry tourists to "lesser-known places" along "new routes."

## Retro Glamour

The experience will lean heavily on the "Made in Italy" brand, with retro interiors inspired by some of Italy's most celebrated designers, including Gio Ponti, Carlo Scarpa and Piero Fornasetti.

The company also promises period artworks on board.

The routes will take in world-famous areas such as the Val d'Orcia in Tuscany, as well as more off-the-beaten-path spots. The "Trapani Triangle" will be a slow ride around Sicily, calling at destinations like Taormina, Agrigento and Modica, plus Trapani and Palermo.

Other routes will lead guests through the country's less touristy corners, including the Sila mountains in Calabria and the coast of Basilicata. Matera, the famous city of "cave dwellings" that features in the upcoming Bond film "No Time to Die," will also be on the itinerary.

Northern routes will include Milan-Cortina through the Dolomites, Milan-Turin through the Piedmont wine region and the Ligurian Riviera.

Each 11-carriage train will carry just 64 people in 32 cabins: 12 deluxe rooms and 20 suites. On board there will be fine dining, live entertainment, a lounge bar and a concierge service to help arrange things on the ground.

There's no word yet on how much tickets will cost.

Can't wait until 2023? In the meantime, Trenitalia has announced new routes for summer 2021, including the first Frecciarossa high-speed train between Milan and Reggio Calabria, along with high-speed services into the mountains such as Bolzano-Ancona and Milan-Trento-Bolzano. The number of services along the Adriatic coast is also being increased.
