# Air Show Season Brings Britain's Red Arrows, the F-35 and the Legendary 747 > Britain's Red Arrows and the Jumbo Jet's anniversary will headline North America's air shows. For the first time in more than a decade, Britain's legendary Royal Air Force aerobatic team, the Red Arrows, is touring the United States and Canada. The Red Arrows pilots, some of the most talented and experienced flyers in the British military, will fly their classic BAe Hawk T1 training jets first to Ottawa, Ontario, and then on to seven more air shows over the course of this summer and fall. Known simply as "the Reds," the team last made a brief visit to the U.S. back in 2008. Their most recent major tour dates all the way back to 1993. "It's been a long time coming for the team," said Squadron Leader Adam Collins, who leads the Reds. "We're really looking forward to coming back and showing off the best of Britain." ## Bracing for a special show Collins offered a sneak peek at what the team has planned for its roughly 25-minute North American display. The first half will mostly feature all nine jets flying tight, intricate aerobatic shapes with breathtaking precision. In the second half, they'll split into groups of five and four, with each group pulling off thrilling head-on passes and other dynamic maneuvers. Depending on the terrain, weather and other factors, some pilots may fly as low as 100 to 300 feet above the ground at stunning speeds. Among the highlights is a special formation to mark the 50th anniversary of Apollo 11 this summer. A note for the enthusiasts: while the Red Arrows jets have been upgraded with digital GPS displays, they still have analog cockpits, since the Hawk T1 dates back to the 1970s. "It's very agile, very nimble," Collins said. But this year promises to be HUGE. Literally. The week-long flying party, hosted by the Experimental Aircraft Association, will pay tribute to the giant Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet on its 50th anniversary. Organizers expect several Boeing 747s to join the airborne bash and be on hand for visitors to see up close. Aviation fans will celebrate the first wide-body airliner, the plane that opened the door to international travel for generations of Americans. Now, 50 years after its first flight, the 747 is becoming a rare breed as major airlines swap them out for fuel-efficient, wide-body twin-engine jets. On top of that, NASA engineers and at least one Apollo 11 astronaut will be on hand for a big 50th-anniversary celebration of Apollo 11. ## Other air shows this year If you can't catch the Red Arrows or make it to Oshkosh, one of the air shows listed below might just help you satisfy your aviation passion this year: (Again, schedules are subject to change. The Melbourne Air & Space Show will host the F-35 demo team's official North American debut, according to organizers. The F-35 has been called the most expensive weapons system in history, partly because of development delays. Not only is it stealthy and maneuverable, but the F-35's sensor technology also lets pilots literally "see" through the floor of the aircraft to spot potential threats and targets on the ground. The U.S. Air Force F-35 demo team flies the A version of the jet. Alongside Oshkosh, Sun 'n Fun ranks among the biggest and best aviation events in America. This year, the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels will show off their F/A-18 Hornet fighter jet skills. Hundreds of thousands of people attend Wings Over Wayne each year, making it "the largest free air show in North Carolina," according to its website. ![](https://test.langandtrip.com.ua/wp-content/uploads/de_import_uploads/june-article-image-111-6-2025.jpg) ## May 4-5: Fort Lauderdale Air Show, Florida Why it matters: Many people love the Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor, with its supercruise capability and thrust vectoring. The official U.S. Air Force F-22 demo team, led by pilot Major Paul "Loco" Lopez, will show off its skills in Fort Lauderdale. With a top speed of around 1,500 miles per hour, the Raptor can "supercruise," meaning it can fly faster than the speed of sound for extended periods without using afterburners. An afterburner injects fuel into the rear of a jet engine's exhaust stream. That creates more power, but it also burns a lot of fuel. The Raptor also has engine nozzles that change the direction of thrust, known as thrust vectoring. When you watch an F-22 demo flight, you can see how thrust vectoring lets the jet practically dance in the air, so it can make tighter turns and point its nose at steeper angles. That makes the F-22 a fierce dogfighter. F-22s are often sent to intercept Russian bombers when they get too close to U.S. airspace. ## May 4-5: Planes of Fame, Chino, California Why it matters: The U.S. Air Force F-16 Viper demo team will show off one of the most successful fighter jets in the U.S. military at the annual Planes of Fame Air Museum show. The F-16 has been in service since the 1970s and is still being produced by Lockheed Martin. Sadly, the museum's unique vintage N9MB Flying Wing prototype, which had been expected to perform, crashed on April 22, killing pilot Dave Vopat. The cause of the crash is still under investigation. The museum posted a tribute to Vopat on its website. The massive C-17 Globemaster transport and the giant KC-135 tanker will perform separately, and together, at this show. Watching aircraft that weigh hundreds of thousands of pounds defy gravity reminds us that powered flight really is amazing. ## July 3-7: Battle Creek Field of Flight, Michigan Why it matters: Have you ever seen an air show at night? It's very cool. This event bills itself as "the third-largest twilight and night air show in the country." ## September 11-15: National Championship Air Races, Reno, Nevada Why it matters: This is much more than an air show. (The U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds will perform here too, by the way.) It's a series of races, flown at dizzying speeds. But this show will also host the Canadian Forces' impressive Snowbirds demonstration team, flying their classic CT-114 Tutors. Some say its "greenhouse" style cockpit window inspired Hollywood's Millennium Falcon spaceship in "Star Wars." If you can't afford a ride at the show, at least take a look at it on the ground at Wings Over Dallas. This rare bird is a true beauty.
