# Rishikesh: Inside India's First Extreme Adventure Zone

Far below, the surging Ganges carves its way through an open canyon while green trees blanket the hillsides. Amid the Himalayan scenery, a slow countdown cuts through the silence.

"3, 2, 1..."

We're standing at the edge of Jumpin Heights in northern India, in Uttarakhand. It's said to be the highest permanent bungee jumping platform in the country.

From 273 feet (83 meters) up, the brave leap into the abyss below.

Beyond bungee jumping, this "extreme adventure zone" also offers giant swings that soar over a tributary of the river, along with Asia's longest "flying fox", a tandem zipline that reaches speeds of 87 miles per hour.

"When you jump over the river, you feel that feeling (the thrill), and, aesthetically, it becomes even more beautiful," says Colonel Manoj Kumar, co-founder of Jumpin Heights.

"It's a once-in-a-lifetime experience, for people who want to test their limits and find out whether they can pull it off."

## Taking the leap

While adventure tourism is well established in other parts of the Asia-Pacific region, India's industry is only just beginning to take off, with an estimated growth rate of 5-7% per year, according to industry publication TTG Asia.

Jumpin Heights Rishikesh went through a steep learning curve before it opened in 2006.

Determined to build a world-class facility, Kumar brought in a team of bungee jumping experts from New Zealand. They designed the structures and continue to run them to this day.

"We wanted to create a place where Indians could safely try bungee jumping, we never set out to attract foreign clients," Kumar says. "Now I can happily say that we rank among the best in the world, and people come to us from places like New Zealand and Switzerland."

The team has overseen more than 65,000 jumps from this towering platform, and to date there has not been a single accident.

## A matter of faith

Rishikesh is known for far more than being India's rising adventure capital.

The region has long been regarded as the country's spiritual and yoga hub, in part because "Mother Ganga", India's longest and most sacred river, rises in the nearby Himalayas.

What's more, monks who are said to be revered in Hinduism live in the mountains, on the hills and in the caves.

As a result, the area draws pilgrims from all over India, the most famous of them being The Beatles, who come to purify themselves in the waters, join yoga and meditation retreats, or spend time with Jamaican spiritual teacher Mooji Baba.

"(The Ganges) is India's lifeline," says Kumar. "So many people depend on the river, so they worship it. Everyone has a wish to come here at least once in their life to take a dip."
