Not enough water slides? The effort almost always outweighs the reward, at least when it comes to time.

You climb dozens of steps to reach the entrance, huffing and puffing your way to the top, and a few seconds later you find yourself splashing about in the pool at the bottom.

That won't happen with a new water slide that has just opened in Malaysia.

Stretching 1,111 metres (3,645 feet) in length, the slide snakes through the undergrowth at the ESCAPE theme park on Penang and reportedly beats the previous record for the world's longest water slide, held by Action Park, a theme park in Vernon, New Jersey.

Unlike the inflatable version in New Jersey, the new ESCAPE slide is made from fibre-reinforced polymer and is a permanent structure fixed to steel columns.

"Breaking a world record was never part of our plan," said Sim Choo Kheng, chief executive of ESCAPE operator Sim Leisure Group, in a statement. "I was always puzzled by how rides are made so short and fast. I wanted to create rides that last several minutes."

The slide offers a four-minute ride down a 70-metre slope that winds through jungle scenery.

Shortness of breath and puffing won't be part of the experience either. Visitors reach the slide by a chairlift.

## Drawing the World's Attention to Penang

The island of Penang, off the west coast of Malaysia, is better known for its culture and cuisine than for thrills.

George Town, the island's main city, draws attention for its colourful mix of cultures, which includes Hindu and Buddhist temples, street art, Islamic mosques, British colonial architecture and lavishly decorated Chinese mansions.

Penang is also considered one of the best food destinations in the world, thanks to its outstanding Malay, Chinese and Indian cuisine, featuring dishes such as Hokkien mee (noodles with fried prawns) and Penang laksa.

ESCAPE is about a 30-minute drive from George Town and offers a variety of adventure attractions, including water slides, ziplines and obstacle courses.
