# A Dizzying Glass-Box Observatory Is About to Open High Above New York

Why settle for one high-altitude landmark when you can have three in a single building?

That seems to be exactly the idea behind Summit One Vanderbilt, which is set to open in the One Vanderbilt tower in Manhattan on October 21.

Billed as the "most thrilling viewing experience in the world," New York's newest observation deck features a fully glass elevator that climbs to a height of more than 1,200 feet, transparent glass boxes, and a room completely covered in mirrors.

The latter is part of a recently announced art installation called "Air," created by artist Kenzo Digital and described as "a walk-through art experience and a story of literal and figurative reflection."

"The excitement around Summit One Vanderbilt has been overwhelming," said Marc Holliday, chairman and CEO of SL Green, the Manhattan-based real estate investment trust that owns the building, in a statement.

## A Jaw-Dropping Experience

"Now that we can finally give people a glimpse of the breathtaking, multilevel, multiroom immersive art experience that is 'Air,' people will begin to understand just how different this place is from anything else in the world."

Visitors can also take a ride on the Ascent glass elevator, which travels along the outside of the building and offers stunning views, or try Levitation, a set of transparent boxes that jut out from the tower and suspend guests 1,063 feet in the air.

"We can't wait to welcome New Yorkers and visitors to New York to this truly unique destination right in the heart of Manhattan, connected to Grand Central Terminal," Holliday adds.

"People will want to come back to Summit One Vanderbilt again and again."

Each of the attractions is part of a 65,000-square-foot entertainment space and observation deck perched at the top of One Vanderbilt, a $3.3 billion project designed by the architecture firm Kohn Pedersen Fox Associates.

Standing 1,401 feet tall, the building is the fourth tallest in New York. The tallest is One World Trade Center, which rises to 1,776 feet.

## "An Incredible Addition"

Beyond its breathtaking attractions, Summit One Vanderbilt also includes a Scandinavian-style lounge and cafe, food courts, and an open-air terrace boasting the "highest urban alpine meadow in the Western Hemisphere."

When the project was first unveiled in May, Fred Dixon, president and CEO of NYC & Company, the organization behind the summer "NYC Reawakens" campaign, said he hoped the attraction's launch would help draw tourists to the city.

"New York will be buzzing with energy this fall, and Summit One Vanderbilt is an incredible addition to its attractions for both locals and visitors," Dixon said in a statement.

The viewing experience is set to launch just a few weeks after the 98-foot (30-meter) Ferris wheel, temporarily installed in the middle of Times Square and drawing thousands of people a day, was dismantled to make room for Broadway's reopening.

New York has several impressive observation decks, including the Top of the Rock observatory at Rockefeller Center, where the upper decks sit 850 feet above street level, and the 102nd-floor observatory of the Empire State Building, which is 1,250 feet above street level.

Tickets to visit Summit One Vanderbilt have just gone on sale ahead of its launch next month, with prices starting at $39 for adults.
