The historic interiors were given a fresh, contemporary update by well-known designer friends of current owner Jeremy Goring: David Linley, Nina Campbell, Tim Gosling and Russell Sage. The reception desks resemble stately Georgian furniture, Gainsborough gold silk dresses the windows, and the walls are covered in hand-painted silver-foil wallpaper by Fromental. The result is refined yet still evokes an English country house. The hotel's world-class service has earned recognition time and again, and in 2013 it was granted a Royal Warrant for hospitality services to Queen Elizabeth. The rooms are smaller than at many of London's top hotels, and there's no lavish spa, but this quality address stands out for its beautiful interiors, quintessential British elegance, excellent food, first-class service and the second-largest private garden in London (after Buckingham Palace). LTI named it the "best luxury hotel in the world" in 2014, and the Beaumont keeps on impressing. Created by restaurateurs Chris Corbin and Jeremy King (their first hotel after a run of hugely popular restaurants), it's a symphony of 1920s glamour, classic style and comfort. The bold interiors of this listed historic building are said to follow a "stripped-back neoclassical style," but the grand art deco spaces create a real sense of drama, echoing the building's history and a bygone era. We also love its quiet yet central setting in Mayfair. The Beaumont has several interconnecting rooms, ideal for families, and babysitting is available on request. Its art collection, personal service, elegant rooms and popular restaurant make it a firm favourite of ours in London. Just a few minutes from Hyde Park, this hotel in glamorous Knightsbridge boasts some of the largest rooms in the capital. It's super-chic, thoroughly modern (the building was constructed from scratch) and huge, with six floors below ground and nine above. It feels vast, yet there are only 85 rooms and suites spread across those six floors, which tells you just how spacious they are. Designed by Antonio Citterio Patricia Viel and Partners, the interiors are contemporary yet still reflect London; Portland stone and bronze, for instance, were used for the carefully considered facade and doors. There are plenty of child-friendly interconnecting rooms and lots to keep kids entertained: a pool, a cinema, a PlayStation, an Xbox and a wealth of games. The concierge or your butler can also arrange day trips, babysitting and anything else you might need. Other amenities include the Bulgari Spa, set across two floors deep underground and offering a wide range of beauty, wellness and spa treatments. Today it looks modern and unashamedly luxurious, yet touches of the grand Victorian building are still clear to see, especially in the public spaces and restaurants. The hotel's rooms and suites are spacious and understated but stylish; and its seven penthouses (based on characters found in London, such as the "Royal," the "Musician" or the "Actor") are superb. Alongside several top-tier restaurants and bars, the hotel is also home to ESPA Life, London's largest spa. There's an in-house florist called By Appointment Only and a Harrods outpost, and guests staying in a penthouse enjoy a complimentary chauffeur-driven car service. The hotel's main bar, Bassoon, is a theatrical, atmospheric spot for a drink, with a Roland grand piano that merges into an 11-metre bar counter adorned with jazz-inspired art. We're including this hotel because it occupies a unique and special place; we think of it as an endless, exclusive house party. The building itself is a charming old fire station, Grade 2 listed, that has been rebuilt with a walled garden. Although it doesn't have all the usual luxuries (such as a gym, spa, pool, several restaurants and a lobby), as a hotel guest you get automatic entry to a buzzing scene that's otherwise practically impossible to access. The rooms are charming, cosy and very comfortable (all with working fireplaces). The hotel itself is family-friendly and children are welcome, though it's mostly adults who stay here. The staff are extremely attentive, and their eye-catching outfits add a touch of old-fashioned glamour. Our favourite place to unwind here is the lantern-lit courtyard, or the wonderful Ladder Shed bar. The courtyard terrace closes at 9pm, so be sure to come for early drinks while you can. Set in High Holborn, the Rosewood is within walking distance of many of the city's major sights. From the outside the building is striking, with an elegant courtyard once meant for horse-drawn carriages and a dome standing 166 feet tall. Designed by Tony Chi & Associates, its decor is quintessentially British but unconventional, even whimsical, though many of the original listed features (the Grand Staircase in Pavonazzo marble and the 166-foot dome, for example) remain untouched. You can expect excellent food and drink in the restaurants and bar, which are destinations in their own right, as well as a superb spa and fitness centre. The Rosewood staff are welcoming, and although it's a large hotel, it feels boutique and personal. As for children's activities, there are Rose Buds music, art, nature or cooking classes on offer, and the concierge can arrange trips to London Zoo, Hamleys and the London Dungeon. The rooms aren't especially large, but this is a wonderful place to stay if you want to keep a low profile or are simply after a stylish luxury boutique hotel in the capital. Billing itself as "London's first boutique grand hotel," we love its refined art deco glamour and excellent service. Add to that the good food, a lively jazz lounge, a chic bar serving claret, whisky, champagne and cigars from the hotel's own humidor, and it becomes clear why The Wellesley made our list. Its small colonnaded lobby is gorgeous, decorated with bespoke crystal chandeliers, mirrored panels, gleaming stone floors and striking bronze doors. The hotel welcomes children, and families should book either The Wellesley Penthouse, which has four interconnecting rooms, or one of the two-bedroom suites. If you're after a larger, international-style hotel with a full range of services, then we'd suggest the Corinthia or the Rosewood. For large apartments, go for the Bulgari. And if you're looking for a more boutique feel, then the Chiltern Firehouse, The Beaumont or The Wellesley won't disappoint.
