# Hilton Salwa: A Giant Luxury Resort in the Middle of the Desert > A water park, beach getaways and fine dining in the middle of the desert. A handful of sun-scorched outposts and mile after mile of vast, empty desert in every direction. Then, earlier this year, something entirely different rose up in the middle of this desolate stretch: a huge, gleaming complex of luxury hotels with its own theme park. The Hilton Salwa Beach Resort & Villas is clearly no ordinary hotel. From a bird's-eye view, it looks like an entire coastal town. Two pristine beaches stretch out from the central marina. Above the sand, bright white villas and buildings are arranged around azure pools. Beyond them lies oasis-like greenery. It's one of the largest resorts in the Middle East. So what happens when a giant luxury hotel appears far from civilization at the exact moment a pandemic freezes global travel? ![](https://test.langandtrip.com.ua/wp-content/uploads/de_import_uploads/june-article-image-81-1-2025.jpg) According to Etienne-Charles Guaix, the resort's general manager, it gets very busy. Since opening its doors in February, it has become a favorite getaway for locals. More recently, it has been a popular destination for visitors and business travelers from across the region. There's more than enough room. Hilton Salwa Beach has 84 villas with two to four bedrooms, private pools and direct access to the white-sand beach (rates start at US$1,500 per night). There are 31 apartments and villas in an Arabian village style, and the main hotel offers 246 rooms and suites. The sprawling grounds are also home to more than 20 restaurants and bars, including seven gourmet venues, an upscale spa with VIP suites, sports courts, pools surrounded by landscaped gardens, corporate facilities and a yacht marina. On top of all that, this is where you'll find Qatar's largest theme park, with dozens of attractions including the "King Cobra," a thrilling dual-tube ride that sends guests plunging into the jaws of a giant serpent-shaped structure. ## Health and safety ![](https://test.langandtrip.com.ua/wp-content/uploads/de_import_uploads/june-article-image-81-2-2025.jpg) The luxury complex is built on 320 hectares of sandy land roughly 100 kilometers southwest of Doha, strategically positioned to welcome visitors from both Qatar and Saudi Arabia. Construction began in 2015, and the final stage before opening focused on adapting to enhanced health and safety measures in line with Qatar's mobility rules and hygiene protocols. "Because of the impact of COVID-19, we had to accelerate the requirements for opening the resort and identify new, unique selling points centered on local getaways," Guaix said. That was good news for 21-year-old Doha resident Sama Jamali and her friends. "Since traveling was risky and difficult, we decided to spend our vacation at the resort," she said. "The room was beautiful, very spacious and comfortable, with cutting-edge technology, safe and clean when it came to COVID-19." ![](https://test.langandtrip.com.ua/wp-content/uploads/de_import_uploads/june-article-image-81-3-2025.jpg) Guaix said that the introduction of travel guidelines and restrictions led to a phased approach to the opening, with a number of venues and facilities, such as a diving center and a state-of-the-art sports academy, expected to come online in the coming months. "We're a new resort, and we offer more than just rooms. We have villas and a water park, which makes our setup quite unique," Guaix said. Alongside efforts to integrate new contactless technology, Guaix pointed to logistics and staffing as key considerations. "On peak days, we welcome up to 2,500 guests across the resort, with a workforce of around 1,200 team members," he said. ## Action and adrenaline ![](https://test.langandtrip.com.ua/wp-content/uploads/de_import_uploads/june-article-image-81-4-2025.jpg) When they're not relaxing or strolling along the cotton-soft sand of the resort's 3.5-kilometer shoreline, these guests can keep themselves busy by choosing from a long list of recreational activities. At the heart of it all is the Desert Falls Water and Adventure Park. The adrenaline-packed attraction features several children's pools and water play areas, along with nearly 30 rides and slides, including a rapids slide that, from its starting point atop the park's 32-meter mountain, offers panoramic views of the entire resort. Here guests can race down tubes on mats, face to face and side by side, in a steep plunge, or try out a surf simulator. ![](https://test.langandtrip.com.ua/wp-content/uploads/de_import_uploads/june-article-image-81-5-2025.jpg) The park is also home to what's billed as the Middle East's first artificial canyoning structure. There's an outdoor karting track, fully equipped with spectator stands, and an indoor laser tag arena. Inevitably, given its size, the hotel offers a whole range of dining options, including Middle Eastern, Italian and Chinese cuisine. Levantine serves signature Arabic dishes with a twist, including The Qattinah, a stunning non-alcoholic cocktail made with spiced syrup, a kaleidoscope of citrus and flakes of 24-karat gold. Mains and desserts include sizzling kebabs served with Mdakhan (smoked hummus and roasted garlic puree), followed by Knafeh nabulsiyeh (pistachio cream). ## Golden drinks and foosball ![](https://test.langandtrip.com.ua/wp-content/uploads/de_import_uploads/june-article-image-81-6-2025.jpg) At Miss Wong, the sound of a gong invites guests to a private Chinese-style dinner that begins with an elegant tea ceremony. Recommendations include chicken soup with vegetables (enoki mushrooms, dried shiitake mushrooms, vegetables, chicken and a turmeric wonton), a variety of dumplings and crispy Peking duck. The refreshing non-alcoholic Orange Sunset cocktail (fresh orange, fresh watermelon, fresh lemon, grenadine syrup, oolong tea and egg white) stands out on the drinks menu. The resort's Dante Cucina Italiana restaurant serves Tuscan wines and wood-fired pizza. Another spot, The League, is a sports and entertainment bar where guests can watch football matches and play pool and foosball. Pitchers of cocktails and buckets of beer are on offer, along with a gastropub menu featuring a selection of burgers, steaks and smoked ribs. Of course, Qatar is hardly short on luxury resort options, especially after hosting the World Cup finals in late 2022. The already crowded lineup includes the W Doha, the Mandarin Doha, the Ritz-Carlton's Sharq Village and Spa, and Anantara's offshore Banana Island Resort, all of which are more convenient to the city center and the airport. So is the trip out to the desert worth it? "We loved the choice of restaurants, especially the continental buffet. Top-quality food with excellent presentation," said Jamali, who is already looking forward to her next stay. "It was a wonderful experience, and there wasn't a single dull moment thanks to the fun and varied entertainment on offer."
