The barrier that once split East from West was demolished, ground down, or sold off at auction. From 1961 to 1989, the imposing East German fortification stretched 156.4 kilometers, completely encircling what was then West Berlin. Today the longest surviving stretch, the East Side Gallery on Berlin's Mühlenstrasse, runs roughly 1.3 kilometers, and you can walk its full length in about 20 minutes. After the two Germanys reunited, tearing down the barrier took 65 cranes, 175 trucks, and 13 bulldozers, finished in the inner city by the end of 1990 and in the outer city by 1992, according to "The Berlin Wall Story," a chronicle of the 204,100-ton monument written by Hans-Hermann Hertle. More than 40,000 sections were crushed for raw materials, mostly to build roads, but some survived intact. These were auctioned off as art objects, or bought by or donated to museums and institutions around the world, such as the Imperial War Museum in London and the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California. Yet some pieces of the Berlin Wall eventually ended up in unexpected places, far from Germany. Here are 10 of them: ## 1. Main Street Station Casino, Brewery and Hotel, Las Vegas Perhaps the most surprising location for the Wall on this list is a men's restroom in a Las Vegas casino. Main Street Station Casino has been home to a piece of the Berlin Wall for about 20 years. Three urinals are mounted on a graffiti-covered concrete slab that stands roughly three meters high and 1.8 meters wide. The wall itself is protected behind glass. It's unclear who brought this section to its questionable home. According to Boyd Gaming Corporation, which owns Main Street Station, the Wall was already in the bathroom when the company acquired the property in the 1990s from another casino that had gone bankrupt before it ever opened. "The Berlin Wall is one of the most popular attractions for tourists at Main Street Station," says Boyd spokesperson David Strow. He adds that the casino had to renovate the bathroom a few years ago because of an "unusually high number of visitors." Perfil Group Building, Buenos Aires A row of Berlin Wall sections can be found in the lobby of the Argentine news company Perfil Group in Buenos Aires. Perfil Group bought 20 sections of the Berlin Wall in total in 1991. The company's website says it bought the Wall for its significance as a symbol of freedom. Schengen, Luxembourg The village of Schengen in southeastern Luxembourg is home to fewer than 2,000 residents, but a section of the Wall was installed to mark its place in European history. The Schengen Agreement (now made up of 26 European countries) was signed here in 1985 to give citizens of member states free movement without border checks. Along with the opening of the European Museum, the Wall section was installed for the agreement's 25th anniversary. The 2.8-meter-tall, 1.2-meter-wide remnant stands in front of the European Museum "as a symbol of a border that no longer exists," according to Martina Kneip, director of the European Center and the European Museum in Schengen. Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles The longest stretch of the Berlin Wall in the United States stands in front of the Variety Building on Wilshire Boulevard in Los Angeles. The 25-ton structure is 3.7 meters high and 11.6 meters wide and is made up of 10 sections. The murals on four of the Wall's sections are original works from the Berlin Wall era, including a green bear painted by a street artist known as Bimer. Others are recent works created by artists such as RETNA from Los Angeles and Herakut from Germany. The Wende Museum in Los Angeles, a research and education institute that preserves Cold War artifacts and history, brought these sections to Wilshire Boulevard in 2009 with help from the German government and the city of Los Angeles as part of "The Wall" project. The museum sponsored the project to "mark the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and continue the legacy of the Berlin Wall as a concrete canvas for art and political expression," according to museum founder and executive director Justinian Jampol. These sections were found near the former border zone of Kreuzberg in Berlin, according to Jampol. Variety Building, 5900 Wilshire Boulevard, Los Angeles ## 5. Europa Park, Madrid The 233,000-square-meter Europa Park on the outskirts of Madrid showcases 17 scaled-down replicas of iconic landmarks from across Europe, including an original piece of the Berlin Wall. The relic sits in the western part of the park. The section was donated to the park by the city council of Torrejón de Ardoz, the region where Europa Park is located. Much of the concrete at the base of the section is missing, exposing a grid of steel rods. Behind it stands a small model of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate. A symbol of the city for centuries, the gate was cut off from West Berlin by the Wall. Hilton Anatole, Dallas Two sections of the Berlin Wall are highlights of the 1,606-room Hilton Anatole in Dallas, which houses a massive art collection of more than a thousand works across 27 floors. The Wall sections were painted by German artist Jürgen Grosse in 1990. Each is 3.6 meters high and 1.2 meters wide. The Wall sections were donated to the hotel by a German partner in 1990 and originally placed in the hotel garden. In 2011, the fragments were moved to the hotel's Trinity corridor. They are part of Berlin Square, an open plaza built in 2005 and funded by the city of Berlin, in the hope that it would be a place where Seoul's citizens could pray for or reflect on the reunification of the Korean Peninsula. According to the Korea Times, the pieces of the Wall here are 3.5 meters high and 3 meters wide, completely covered in graffiti on one side and blank on the other. The Wall is accompanied by a traditional German gas lantern and a statue of a blue bear, the symbol of Berlin. Near Jangtong Bridge, Cheonggyecheon Stream, Seoul ## 8. Western Station, Brown Line, Chicago At the Western station on the Chicago Transit Authority's Brown Line, in the traditionally German neighborhood of Lincoln Square, stands a section of the Berlin Wall 3.6 meters high and 1.2 meters wide. The section was installed at the station on January 19, 2008. It was donated to the city of Chicago by the Senate and city of Berlin to be displayed "as a memorial relic for viewing by the citizens of Chicago and the public," according to the CTA. Western station (Brown Line), 4648 N. Western Ave., Chicago ## 9. Vatican Gardens, Vatican City A piece of the Berlin Wall was moved to the Vatican in August 1994. In the elegant garden where popes have meditated and rested since the 13th century, the Wall is decorated with a painting of the Church of St. Michael. According to ITN Source, former Ferrari motorsport director and Formula One team manager Marco Piccinini won this section at an auction in Monte Carlo in 1990 and donated it to the Vatican in 1994. Madison Avenue, New York Office workers in suits usually pay no attention to the five sections of the Berlin Wall standing in Paley Park next to 520 Madison Avenue in Manhattan. About 6 meters long and 3.6 meters high, the section was bought from the German government in 1990 by the park's owner, Tishman Speyer Properties. Tishman Speyer is also the developer of the Sony Center, a large commercial complex on Potsdamer Platz, a former border zone in Berlin.
