Bursting up through the city's limestone foundations are 118 natural thermal springs that deliver 70 million litres of healing water every single day.

Little wonder it's known as the "City of Baths".

Budapest's Turkish baths are wonderful, a lasting reminder of Ottoman rule in the 16th and 17th centuries, and famous the world over for their relaxing and healing properties.

The city isn't just packed with thermal baths, though; its open-air pools also play a huge part in making summer (and winter) that much more enjoyable.

Here are the 10 best spas and swimming spots worth visiting on a trip to Budapest:

## Rudas Baths

Set at the foot of Gellért Hill on the banks of the Danube, Rudas Baths are among the most popular thermal baths in Budapest.

Built in 1550, they have the look and feel of a traditional Turkish bath from the days of Ottoman rule.

At the heart of it all is a large octagonal pool, along with five smaller thermal pools, a sauna, a steam room and massage rooms.

The modern extension also features a large swimming pool and a rooftop jacuzzi that draws crowds in both summer and winter.

Entry: $18.60 on weekdays and $23 on weekends. The steam room is open daily from 6:00 to 20:00.

## Széchenyi Baths

Built in 1913, the Széchenyi Baths are a must-visit in Budapest and remain hugely popular with travellers.

Tucked away in the heart of City Park, these baths are among the largest in Europe and the only thermal baths on the Pest side of the river.

Three enormous outdoor pools stay open all year round, making a wonderful spot for sunbathing in the summer.

Winter here is something special too: making the dash from one of the 10 indoor pools to the open-air bathing area is guaranteed to wake you right up.

Inside you'll find plenty of saunas, steam rooms and massage rooms, with a range of treatments available on request.

## Gellért Baths

The Gellért Baths sit inside the grand Gellért Hotel, which opened in 1918 and is a striking example of the Art Nouveau style popular in Hungary at the time.

Standing at the foot of Gellért Hill, the building is famous across Hungary and has appeared in plenty of local and international films.

The bath complex was expanded in 1927 with the addition of an outdoor pool complete with a wave machine.

There's also a steam room, a sauna, a sun terrace, thermal baths and massage rooms, creating an inviting pool area whatever the weather.

## Király Baths

Among the oldest baths in the city, the Király Baths occupy one of the few buildings in Budapest that was actually built during Ottoman rule.

Built in 1565, their main draw is a magnificent pool beneath a dome. The bath complex also includes a thermal pool, massage rooms, a sauna and a steam room.

A recent addition to the spa is a Finnish sauna with a cold-water plunge pool, which has proved a huge hit with the locals.

## Lukács Baths

Set on the Buda side, the thermal springs at the Lukács Baths have been in use since the 12th century.

The historic building became a medicinal spa and wellness centre in the late 19th century, and its courtyard is adorned with marble plaques of thanks from those who were treated here.

The Lukács Baths were last renovated in 2012 and now consist of four warm thermal baths, a cold-water pool and several massage and treatment rooms.

## Royal Spa at the Corinthia Hotel Budapest

## Veli Bej (or Császár Baths)

Originally commissioned by the Ottoman statesman Sokollu Mustafa, Veli Bej (also known as the Császár Baths) was regarded as the most beautiful bathhouse of its era when it was built in the 16th century.

Beautifully restored in 2017, its centrepiece is a large octagonal hot-water pool surrounded by four smaller pools.

The elegant building also houses a modern swimming pool, steam baths, a sauna, a jacuzzi and a dedicated hydrotherapy bath.

## Danubius Health Spa Resort Margitsziget, Margaret Island

## Palatinus Baths, Margaret Island

The Palatinus Baths were the first place in Hungary where visitors were allowed to bathe outdoors.

Today it's a popular spot for locals and tourists alike, who flock here in the summer to soak up the sun and make the most of 11 different pools.

Alongside the thermal baths and mineral waters from the island's natural springs, Palatinus also boasts giant water slides and a wave pool.

In 2017 a new wellness centre was added, complete with a Finnish sauna, a geothermal sauna and a steam chamber.

The cold and hot-water pools also help make this one of the best places to visit in the city during the summer months.
